Port of Spain July 3, Trinidad and Tobago:
In a deeply emotional and culturally rich gathering, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora and friends of India in Trinidad and Tobago during his historic visit to the Caribbean nation.

The event Namaste Modi, held in National Cycling Centre, was attended by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who warmly received PM Modi and extended her heartfelt greetings on behalf of the Indo-Trinidadian community.

In his address, PM Modi expressed admiration for the Indo-Caribbean community’s unwavering commitment to preserving their Indian heritage, values, and cultural traditions over generations.

“Even after so many generations, you have carried forward the festivals, traditions, and way of life of your ancestors from India,” he said.
“Your devotion to Sanatan Sanskriti and your strong family and community ties form a living bridge between India and Trinidad & Tobago.”

Recognizing the deep historical roots of the Indian community in Trinidad & Tobago — many of whom are fifth or sixth-generation descendants of Indian indentured laborers — PM Modi made a significant policy announcement:

“India will now issue OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards to the sixth generation of Indian origin in Trinidad & Tobago.”

The announcement was met with thunderous applause from the crowd, with many seeing it as an acknowledgment of their continued contribution to Indian culture abroad and a reaffirmation of their connection to Bharat Mata.

The atmosphere was filled with pride and devotion as community members performed bhajansRamleela excerpts, and traditional folk dances representing India’s diverse cultural legacy. Youths dressed in ethnic attire waved Indian flags, and families gathered in unity to welcome the leader of their ancestral homeland.

Many speakers reflected on the arrival of Indian ancestors to Trinidad during the 19th century and how, through faith, perseverance, and cultural resilience, the Indo-Trinidadian community flourished — becoming an integral part of the nation’s social, political, and spiritual fabric.

The event served not just as a welcome, but as a celebration of shared roots, identity, and global unity. PM Modi’s presence and message emphasized the importance of nurturing diaspora relationships in building a stronger, interconnected future.

India lives on — not only in the land, but in the hearts of her children across the world.
