Videos of the event—now viral—show devotees maintaining calm and continuing their celebration of Lord Jagannath despite being targeted from a nearby building. The visuals have drawn condemnation across social media, with many expressing deep concern over what they say is a growing pattern of anti-Hindu hate and xenophobia in Canada.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi wasted no time in responding. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said,
We have seen reports regarding disruption created by mischievous elements during the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto. Such despicable acts are regrettable and go against the spirit of the festival, which promotes unity, inclusivity, and harmony.
India has formally taken up the matter with the Canadian government and urged it to ensure the safety and religious freedom of its Hindu citizens and diaspora.
This is not an isolated event. The past year has seen a disturbing uptick in targeted attacks on Hindu temples and institutions across Canada:
- BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Edmonton was vandalized.
- Hindu temples in Brampton, Mississauga, Windsor, Ajax, and Surrey have been defaced with anti-India and pro-Khalistan graffiti.
- In November 2024, a violent confrontation took place at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton during a religious event.
These acts of hatred have raised serious concerns among Canadian Hindus about religious intolerance, lack of adequate protection, and the unchecked rise of extremist elements in the country.
Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed deep concern, noting that such incidents hurt the sentiments of devotees across the world:
Such incidents cause deep pain to the people of Odisha, for whom this festival is emotionally and culturally significant. If the reports are true, the Odisha Government should work with the MEA and protest officially.
Hindu organizations in North America have demanded stronger security measures for religious processions and increased engagement from Canadian law enforcement to prevent hate crimes.
Despite the provocation, the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto continued peacefully. Organizers said they would not be intimidated by hatred.
