The 5th Fiji National Hindu Conference commenced today at the Harbour Point Convention Hall in Lami, drawing together religious leaders, scholars, and community representatives under the theme “United Communities, Stronger Fiji.”
The annual gathering, organized by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) Fiji, aims to address key challenges to Hindu unity while fostering collaboration among temples, cultural bodies, and government institutions.
In his opening address, VHP Fiji President Jay Dayal highlighted the guiding principles of Dharma, emphasizing its universal values that transcend race, religion, caste, or creed.
Dharma is not confined to ritual, but a way of righteous living that promotes harmony within society, Dayal said, encouraging collective efforts to strengthen community ties through shared values.
The event was graced by His Excellency Suneet Mehta, Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, who underscored the pivotal role of Indian heritage institutions in preserving cultural identity.
Our temples, schools, community halls, and cultural centres serve as guardians of our traditions, Mehta noted. Organisations like Chaisalatam Dharam, IRISM, and Prakriti Nithyanandam reflect the interconnectedness of our heritage institutions and their enduring relevance in modern society.
The day’s second session will feature panel discussions involving representatives from various government agencies, addressing key socio-cultural challenges and policy support for the Hindu community.
Delegates from across Fiji and the Pacific region took part in a full day of activities, including cultural programs, youth engagement sessions, and interfaith dialogues—all aimed at fostering a more united and harmonious Fijian society.
