A 27-year-old woman in Tiruppur district died by suicide on June 28, allegedly following sustained dowry harassment and abuse by her husband and his family. The deceased, identified as A. Rithanya, had been married for just over two months.
According to police sources, Rithanya was found unconscious in her car near Mondipalayam on Saturday afternoon. She was rushed to Avinashi Government Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. Prior to her death, she recorded and sent seven audio messages to her father, detailing the mental and physical abuse she allegedly endured at the hands of her husband, Kavin Kumar (27), and his parents.
In one of the voice notes, Rithanya is reported to have said, “I am sorry, Appa. I hoped my life would change, but it won’t. I cannot bear the torture anymore.” The messages, now part of the police investigation, describe alleged emotional abuse by her in-laws and physical assault by her husband.
Rithanya and Kavin were married on April 11, 2025. Her family claims to have given 100 sovereigns of gold and a Volvo car worth ₹70 lakh as dowry. Despite this, the woman was reportedly subjected to continuous demands for additional money and jewellery. Her father, R.G. Annadurai (53), stated that she had been locked inside the house and isolated by her in-laws.
In seven voice messages sent to her father, R.G. Annadurai (53), Rithanya spoke of the emotional and physical abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of her husband, Kavin Kumar (27), and his parents, Eswaramurthy (51) and Chithradevi (47). In one of the recordings, she reportedly said, “I cannot bear his torture… I thought life would change, but it hasn’t.”
Police registered a case at the Sevur Police Station under Sections 498A (cruelty by husband or relative), 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code, and provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. All three accused have been arrested.
