Suva, Fiji — In a vibrant celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring bonds of friendship between India and Fiji, the High Commission of India in Suva and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), in collaboration with Vishnu Laxmi Narayan Mandir, Savusavu, hosted a grand cultural evening showcasing the classical Odia dance tradition.
The highlight of the event was a mesmerising performance by the Suravi Dance Group from Odisha, India, led by renowned Odissi exponent and cultural ambassador, Guru Dr. Pitambar Biswal. The group is currently visiting Fiji under the auspices of the ICCR to promote Indian classical arts and strengthen cultural exchange.
The event drew an enthusiastic local audience and was graced by Mr. Kuldeo Singh, Assistant District Officer of Cakadrove, who attended as the Chief Guest. In his address, Mr. Singh praised the initiative for fostering deeper people-to-people connections and acknowledged the vital role such cultural exchanges play in strengthening Indo-Fijian relations.
The evening featured a series of intricate and emotive Odia dance presentations that highlighted the grace, rhythm, and spiritual depth of Odissi — one of India’s oldest classical dance forms. The performances received resounding applause from the audience, many of whom experienced this traditional Indian art form for the first time.
Representatives from the Indian High Commission and ICCR expressed their gratitude to the local Fijian community for their warm reception and support. The event marked another step forward in the longstanding cultural partnership between India and Fiji, underlining shared values and a deep mutual appreciation for heritage and diversity.
