New York City – On June 14th, the streets of Manhattan came alive with divine celebration as tens of thousands of devotees gathered for the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, parading down the iconic Fifth Avenue in a vibrant display of bhakti, unity, and spiritual joy. Despite rain and high humidity, the crowd pressed on joyfully, many donning umbrellas and ponchos as they sang and danced in glorification of the Lord of the Universe.
Organized by ISKCON New York, this year’s Rath Yatra was marked by devotional grandeur, with three full days of festivities showcasing kirtan, cultural performances, and spiritual outreach, culminating in what was described as the largest turnout at Radha Govinda Temple to date.
The procession saw the participation of many esteemed spiritual leaders including Radhanath Swami, Candramauli Swami, Mahavisnu Swami, Vaisesika Das, Malati Devi Dasi, Deena Bandhu Das, and Madhava Das, along with other senior devotees from across the globe.
Dignitaries present included Sri Binaya Pradhan, Consulate General of India in New York; Sri Sunil Sitaldin, Permanent Representative of Suriname to the United Nations; Vrishni Rao, Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Mauritius to the UN; and Sibu Nair, Director of Community Affairs from the New York Governor’s Office.
The festival began on Friday at Tompkins Square Park, the historic site where Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, first chanted the Hare Krishna mantra in 1966 under the now-famous “Hare Krishna Tree.” The mellow kirtan at the park set the spiritual tone for the days ahead.
That evening, devotees converged on Times Square, offering kirtan at the crossroads of the modern world — an act seen by many as a bold affirmation of Sanatana Dharma in the heart of urban life.
Saturday’s grand procession down Fifth Avenue was followed by a vibrant cultural festival at Washington Square Park, featuring world-class dance performances, vegetarian food stalls, devotional apparel, and interactive tentsintroducing the public to the philosophy and practice of Krishna consciousness.
“Washington Square becomes a spiritual carnival,” said one organizer. “It’s where many people first encounter the Hare Krishna movement, and often, that moment becomes a turning point.”
The final day was celebrated at the Radha Govinda Temple in Brooklyn, where the temple hall was filled beyond capacity with devotees and newcomers. The electrifying kirtan was led by Radhanath Swami, Vaisesika Das, and Madhava Das, along with emerging devotional musicians.
Looking ahead, ISKCON NYC is preparing for the 50th Golden Jubilee of the Fifth Avenue Rath Yatra in 2026, marking the first time Srila Prabhupada personally participated in the parade in 1976. That year will also coincide with ISKCON’s 60th anniversary since its incorporation in New York in 1966.
Organizers have already begun planning and are inviting devotees worldwide to be part of this historic milestone.
