Georgetown, Guyana – The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has issued a strong public condemnation of a recently released music video by local artiste Baby Skello, whose lyrics and visuals have been described as vulgar, disrespectful, and gravely offensive to the Hindu community.
In a formal statement issued this week, the Sabha expressed outrage and deep offense at what it called a deliberate and insensitive attack on Maha Lakshmi, the revered Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity, and purity.
“His obscene lyrics gravely disparage Maha Lakshmi, who is revered and worshipped by Hindus globally,” the Sabha stated. “The Hindu Community is outraged and deeply offended by the vulgar and disrespectful lyrics and content within artiste Baby Skello’s new video.”
The Dharmic Sabha, one of the country’s most respected Hindu organisations, has formally called upon the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) and the Guyana Police Force to initiate condign action against the artiste. They further demand that Baby Skello publicly apologize to the Hindu community and immediately withdraw the offensive song from all platforms.
While reiterating the Hindu community’s tradition of peace, interfaith respect, and tolerance, the Sabha warned that the growing trend of religious mockery and cultural insensitivity cannot go unchecked.
Beyond the religious offense, the Sabha also raised serious concerns about the continued portrayal of women in degrading ways under the guise of entertainment. The organisation warned that such depictions contribute to gender-based harassment and violence, especially among young audiences.
The Dharmic Sabha has urged all Guyanese, regardless of faith or background, to stand together in condemning this form of artistic irresponsibility. They view the issue not just as an offense to Hindus, but as a national challenge to mutual respect, decency, and social harmony.
The controversy has reignited urgent conversations around freedom of expression vs. hate speech, especially in a plural, multicultural society like Guyana where inter-religious respect is essential to national unity.
