Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a historic state visit to Trinidad and Tobago in the first week of July, following a formal invitation extended by the newly elected Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar. This will mark Modi’s first visit to the twin-island nation as Prime Minister and his first in over two decades, having last visited in 2002 during the World Hindu Conference.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar described the upcoming visit as a significant moment in the diplomatic relationship between the two nations. She emphasized that Modi’s presence will open the door for enhanced bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, with ongoing discussions currently taking place between Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian High Commission.
“This visit will strengthen the foundation of our partnership and help shape new avenues for cooperation between our two nations,” said PM Kamla.
Notably, this will also be the first international leader PM Kamla will host since assuming office earlier this year. Her Indian ancestry further adds symbolic depth to the visit, as her personal heritage now intersects with broader diplomatic ties.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar has previously been recognized by the Government of India with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman—India’s highest honor for overseas Indians—for her global contributions in public service and leadership.
Following his trip to Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Brazil from July 5–8 to participate in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and will also make a state visit to Argentina shortly afterward.
